Bibb Lettuce

German Name:  Kopfsalat

Swiss Name:  Kopfsalat

French Name:  Salades de laitue

Italian Name:  Insalate di lattuga

There are many types of butterhead lettuce. Most have small, round, loosely formed heads with soft buttery textured leaves ranging from pale green on the outer leaves to pale yellow-green on the inner leaves. The flavor is sweet and succulent. Bibb lettuce should be gently washed because the leaves are quite tender.

Season:  April to October

Purchasing Tips:  Look for leaves that are bright green and fresh, with no signs of wilting or browning. Look at the root end (or cut end). It should appear freshly cut, and not shriveled or overly brown.

Storage:  Bibb lettuce is very fragile, so it should be kept no more than two days. Keep the lettuce in a plastic bag and refrigerated.

Cooking Tips:  Bibb lettuce is used almost exclusively in salads.
