Blueberry

German Name:  Heidelbeere

Swiss Name:  Heidelbeere

French Name:  Myrtille

Italian Name:  Mirtillo

These dark blue berries produce an intensely dark red juice, at least in the wild varieties. Unfortunately, most blueberries that are on the market today are cultivated and not only taste different, but also produce far less juice, even though they are considerably larger. Blueberries are also called bilberry or myrtille in Swiss markets.

Season:  June through September

Purchasing Tips:  Look for firm berries, that are uniform in size. Discard shrivelled or mouldy berries.

Storage:  Blueberries do not keep well, and they are best consumed soon after purchase. If necessary, place on a paper towel in a single layer and refrigerate up to 3 days. Do not wash blueberries until ready to use.

Cooking Tips:  Excellent for making compotes, pies, jams and jellies.

Nutritional Info:  Like most berries, they contain important minerals (calcium, potassium, phosphorous, zinc and magnesium), along with Vitamins A and B.
